Welcome to Sherpa Food Tours in Rio de Janeiro, part of our global collection of High-Fidelity Local Experiences. This tour was designed to decode how one of the world's great food cities actually eats, led by passionate cariocas. It's a culinary and cultural adventure served with insight, tropical flavor, and a touch of cachaça.

We begin at a marble-counter botequim for bolinho de bacalhau and an ice-cold chopp, the way cariocas have socialised for a century. From there, we walk into the neighbourhood street market for a blistered pastel and fresh-pressed sugarcane juice, a snack with its own migration story. From here you'll explore what Rio offers beyond the postcard: manioc, the Indigenous staple that reappears as farofa, as tapioca, and as the puffed ring sold on the sand, and the West African dendê that built the coastal kitchen. Dishes will leave you understanding why three continents met at this port and stayed for lunch. It's a journey through the past, present, and future of carioca cooking, one unforgettable bite at a time.

Our backdrop is Ipanema and Leblon, the stretch that captures the carioca way of living. A century ago this was dunes and fishermen's shacks; by the 1960s these streets had given the world bossa nova. Today it's a walkable grid of juice bars, botequins, and the Saturday feira. Between bites, you'll wander past beach kiosks, corner bakeries, and vendors selling mate on the sand, catching the rhythm of local life in the city's most photographed neighbourhoods.
