Welcome to Sherpa Food Tours in Rio de Janeiro, part of our global collection of High-Fidelity Local Experiences. This tour was designed to decode how one of the world's great food cities actually lives, led by passionate cariocas. In Rio, food is never only about eating: it's a way of moving through the day, from the salt air of the beach to a corner bar at dusk, served with insight, tropical flavour, and a well-shaken caipirinha.

We begin at a waterfront quiosque, the beach kiosk cariocas treat as an open-air living room, over a spread of petiscos: crisp pastéis, chicken coxinhas, bolinhos de bacalhau, with an ice-cold cerveja or a mate gelado poured with lime. A few blocks inland, a casa de sucos puts Brazilian biodiversity on a single overhead display — caju, maracujá, goiaba, graviola — pressed to order. Then comes the boteco, the unpretentious corner bar at the heart of carioca social life, for galeto, churrasco, sanduíche de pernil with caramelised pineapple, crackling torresmo, and beer served estupidamente gelada. We trade the street for a chic, semi-casual dining room where local chefs give regional home cooking a modern reading: moqueca carioca with coconut milk and dendê, picanha with farofa and cassava. And we close back near the sea breeze with real Amazonian açaí, thick and icy under banana, granola and toasted tapioca, one unforgettable bite at a time.

Our backdrop is the beach grid where cariocas actually live: a few blocks of sand, shade and sidewalk between Ipanema and northern Copacabana. A century ago this was dunes and fishermen's shacks; today it's a walkable stretch of quiosques, juice bars and botecos, where the day drifts from sand to sidewalk table without anyone deciding it should. Between bites you'll pass corner bakeries, mosaic pavements and vendors selling mate on the sand, catching the rhythm of local life in the city's most photographed neighbourhoods.
